Marle Cottage lies off a single track lane, nestled at the foot of the Preseli hills, just a few miles away from the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline and close to the beautiful rural towns of Cardigan , Crymych and Newcastle Emlyn. Set on a six acre organic smallholding with deep beds, a small orchard, a wildlife garden and pond, it is surrounded by glorious countryside which plays host to an abundance of wildlife.
Life here is peaceful, with birdsong, cock crowing and bleating sheep the soundtrack to the day. At the moment we have free range hens and geese, but soon our goats will arrive along with a few sheep to keep the grass down.
At damselfly on warm summer days, dragonflies and damselflies flit over the pond, in which pond skaters, water boatmen, whirlygigs and newts abound, whilst bumblebees and honeybees, butterflies, blackbirds, thrushes, magpies throng in the garden, and at dusk there are bats, and later huge starry skies. Marle is also home visited by badgers, foxes, voles and moles, red tailed kites, buzzards, and a host of smaller birds.Watch out for murmerations at the right time of year.
Life is what you make it, but it’s a bit easier to make it special here.
Heather has been a cabinet maker for many years and Gill has worked, supporting different groups of vulnerable people, using nature as a key to recovery to achievement.
We lived in the very beautiful Peak District but had a hankering to be by the sea and had fallen in love with Pembrokeshire over many camping holidays.
We both had a deep desire to get back to the land, to have a go at self sufficiency so when the opportunity to move to a smallholding in Pembrokeshire arose we didn’t hesitate.
We have been smallholding for many years now with an equal measure of triumphs and mistakes, but we still find it enormous fun and wake up each day with new plans and ideas. Our hope is to acquire our own goats later this year and to start making cheese again next year. We have our own hens and geese and will soon have more sheep again.
We love the laid back life in Pembrokeshire the beautiful beaches and exillerating coast line, we love fires and drumming, observing wildlife, many hours have been lost checking out the dragon and damselflies, we have always enjoyed camping and with the emergence of glamping we wondered if we could share some of the fun of outside living and small holding in this wonderful environment with others, and so we hatched our plan for Damselfly

This is a tranquil haven, home to a host of industrious birds, bees and butterflies and some fabulous flora. We loved the cosy and comfortable interior – particularly that most of the brilliant furniture is the work of the owners - and the gorgeous private garden space, complete with firepit and affectionate cat for the perfect starlit evening (or even a cloudy one as was the case for us). Damselfly really shows the care and attention of its friendly and welcoming owners, Gill and Heather. Thanks for having us.
